On Sunday, September 14th, MAAP had the honor of attending the Richmond Porsche Meet at the stunning Dover Hall. But this year, one car stole the show: our fully restored 1960 Porsche 356B Super 90 Coupe, which was awarded The Alex Smith Award for Most Significant Porsche.
This wasn’t just a win for us here at MAAP, it was a full-circle moment. After years of meticulous restoration, the Super 90 was returned to its original owner, David Cottrell, and recognized for its historical significance and rarity.
The Rarest of the Rare

There is no Porsche 356 more rare than this one. This Super 90 is believed to be the only 356B Super 90 ever built with a pre-production electric “Schiebedach” sunroof. This feature is so rare, even Porsche historians have only seen it in prototype documentation.
Designed by sunroof specialist Golde and installed by Reutter, the system features a 6V electric motor mounted in the engine bay, connected by a complex network of cables, tubing, and hoses. Unlike the production sunroofs introduced in 1962 with headliner-mounted motors, this early system was experimental and ultimately abandoned due to its complexity and weight.
In our research, we found only three late 356A models and one other 1960 356B (with a Normal engine) ever equipped with this prototype sunroof. This Super 90 stands alone as the only known example with the Super 90 engine option.
The Restoration Journey

Originally ordered through Brumos Porsche in May 1960 for a client who missed out on a Carrera allocation, this car came loaded with unique features.
Restoration began in August 2018 under the guidance of Cole Scrogham and in collaboration with Carolina Coach Crafters. MAAP students played a hands-on role in every phase of the process including tear-down and discovery, reassembly, and attention to detail with the last finishes.
When the Super 90 first came to MAAP, it was rusted beyond recognition. From battling with seized door handles to recreating the luggage set from scratch, the students and workers put blood, sweat, and tears into this restoration.
On the Ground Again and On Display

After years off the road, the Super 90 was finally back on its wheels, aligned and tuned to factory specs. In March 2026, it made its public debut at the Amelia Island Concours, where it earned a class award in the 1960s Sports Cars category and received 317 People’s Choice votes.
The Richmond Porsche Meet marked another milestone: the car’s return to its owner, and a celebration of the history and heart that went into its restoration.
Why It Matters
This Super 90 isn’t just a rare Porsche, it’s a symbol of what MAAP stands for: education, preservation, and passion. Through this project, students learned hands-on restoration techniques, historical research, and the importance of authenticity in automotive craftsmanship.
We’re proud to share this story and honored to have played a role in bringing this one-of-a-kind Porsche back to life.
