About Us

Learn about MAAP, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to preparing students for future careers in the automotive industry through hands‑on experience.

The Story Of MAAP

It all starts with a love for cars and the belief that passion should lead somewhere.

The Scrogham family’s connection to James Madison University spans three generations, and that legacy is the foundation of Madison Automotive Apprentices. In the 1960s, Weldon Scrogham attended JMU before going on to found G&W Sales and Service in 1971, earning national recognition for precision Porsche, Volkswagen, and classic car restoration. Though Weldon has since passed, his passion for craftsmanship and education lives on.

That passion carried forward to the next generation. Cole Scrogham (’90, ’16M) returned to JMU, where a shared love of classic cars sparked a partnership with former JMU President Dr. Linwood H. Rose. Together, the two of them set out with a clear vision: create an educational program that prepares students for real careers in the automotive industry. Through partnership with JMU leadership, that vision became Madison Automotive Apprentices, an organization built at the intersection of education and industry.

Today, MAAP prepares students for the future of the automotive world through hands‑on, vocational-style experience in motorsports and automotive restoration. Operating without any government grants or assistance, MAAP sustains itself through a business‑based model that creates revenue from our student-engaged projects. These projects are intentionally educational and provide leadership and specialist opportunities for students interested in pursuing automotive careers.

Since then, MAAP has continued to turn passion into profession all while honoring the legacy that started it all.

Our Vision

Established at James Madison University in 2017, MAAP’s vision is to ignite meaningful connections between students, auto manufacturers, higher education institutions, vintage auto clubs, and other nonprofit organizations.

Our Core Objective

Provide a space for an automotive workshop to prepare and educate students through service provision to clients, and assisted by JMU faculty, to facilitate learning related to the education, history, and social value of the automobile to students and the general public.
